It’s time to show the world what team GB can do. On Tuesday, the 6th December children across the UK will compete with children in Australia, New Zealand and the United States for the title of World Skoolbo Champion. Answer as many questions as you can on reading, maths and languages during the 4 day event.

The Skoolbo World Cup is back for a third year! Children in the UK will be competing against other Skoolbo-ers in classrooms across the USA, New Zealand and Australia.

Running from Tuesday 6th to Friday 9th of December, your students’ avatars will wear a new Team GB uniform. Every question your students answer correctly puts the UK one step closer to victory! There will be an automated tally on the Skoolbo website homepage so you can see the results live.

This is a great way to motivate and engage students to learn by answering lots of maths and literacy questions.

Let’s have some fun as we join together to take on the world in the Skoolbo World Cup!

Whale Hill Primary School – ClassBo Champions!

A new school year is beginning full of excitement and new opportunities. We hope everyone has enjoyed the summer and is looking forward to the term ahead.

One Skoolbo school ended last year on a high and we’d like to share their success with you. We’re sure that these great students will inspire others to follow their wonderful example.

John Frost is the Computing Leader for Whale Hill and has been busy motivating students to improve their maths, literacy and language skills by rolling out Skoolbo across the school. The teachers are also brilliant at sharing students’ successes across social media which has helped to tell their Skoolbo story as it unfolds.

Year 4 were the first to appear on Twitter, demonstrating just how engaged they are with their learning on the platform –

Each year group had been set a Mega ClassBo Challenge to answer 25,000 maths and literacy questions over a two week period and Year 4 took an early lead –

The regular Twitter updates revealed some very close competition and Year 2 were also early ClassBo stars –

By the end of term all this effort had paid off and not just in terms of the amazing learning progress, Whale Hill Primary School had shot straight to the top of the leaderboard –

And it wasn’t just Whale Hill students who were winners as a result of participating in these ClassBos, WaterAid UK will benefit from every ClassBo successfully completed last term (more to follow).

As you can see from the fabulous comments below, the children are adept at reflecting on their learning and have come up with some great suggestions for developing Skoolbo in the future. We’ll certainly take these ideas on board so thank you!

What do you enjoy most about Skoolbo?

You get to play games and learn at the same time. (Y1)

It looks really good on the iPad. It doesn’t feel like learning but you are. (Y2)

The games are short so you can play for a long time or a short amount of time if you want. (Y4)

Where do you play Skoolbo most? at home, at school, in the car?

Almost half of children in Y2 and Y4 had used it at home including downloading the app. Y3 and Y5 was more than a quarter. All have had the opportunity to use it in school a number of times (Mr Frost)

How has the ClassBo challenge made learning more exciting?

It tells you how many points you have so you want to get more and be better. (Y2)

When the teacher shows us the points you can see your own score and you want to get the most so you play more. (Y3)

You get to see how close you are getting to the target and you only have 2 weeks which makes it feel like a competition. (Y5)

Do you talk to your friends about Skoolbo/ClassBo?

The children have said that they often talk about it with each other in school. More than half in Y4 and Y5 said they had talked about Skoolbo, even if it was to compare points (Mr Frost)

We are always looking for new and exciting things to add to Skoolbo. Do you have any suggestions for us? new lands, new languages, new rewards, new vehicles?

Rockets in space, underwater (on a shark’s back) and on the moon!

How do you feel when you master a new game?

I feel really proud. (Y1)

It makes me want to keep going and do even better. (Y2)

I feel more confident. (Y3)

It makes me feel like I’m good and getting better at maths and English. (Y4)

I want to master more topics and improve further. (Y5)

And here are some comments from the teachers –

It has been wonderful to see the level of enthusiasm for Skoolbo that children across the school have. We thought they would like it but they don’t. They love it.

I have seen children who lack confidence in Maths and English lessons fist-pump the air with pride as they achieve a personal-best score. Children who will easily disengage in lessons have tentatively asked when we will next be able to use Skoolbo in school. Quiet and timid children have flourished with the healthy competition that the year group leaderboard provides.

Furthermore, the opportunity to set targets as a ClassBo challenge has appealed to the children. It has provided them with a specific aim and given an explicit purpose for using Skoolbo as well as enjoyment and learning. The Water Aid focus and the resources provided have helped us as teachers to make cross-curricular links from Geography to Science to PSHCE.

On the last day of the year, the children were allowed to bring in their own toys and games to play. Within an hour, Y4 were asking if they could play on Skoolbo. That they would choose it over free time with their friends and their own toys says more than I could put into words.

Today we take a trip across the Severn Bridge to meet the wonderful students of Llanedeyrn Primary School in Cardiff. They are one of the top performing schools in Wales and terrific ambassadors for Skoolbo. A quick look at the home page of their website will tell you all you need to know about how far these students are prepared to push themselves to suceed as the photograph of some of them at the 886 metre summit of Pen Y Fan shows.

We have been following their astonishing story of achievement and improvement on Skoolbo as it unfolds and we thought it was about time we met the stars of the show!

Using tablets, they have made an astounding 31% improvement in Maths and Literacy collectively since starting on Skoolbo and they are showing no signs of slowing down!

Mr Price has been the driving force behind getting Skoolbo established in the school and he has even made a special Skoolbo widget for the school website!

We think this is a great idea as it enables children to quickly sign in and begin learning whether they are at school or home. It’s also helpful for letting parents and carers know where they can register for a parent account so that they can keep track of their child’s progress.

If this isn’t enough, they have made this fabulous video highlighting everything they love about Skoolbo. Here you will see students ‘Zippy Shaking’ and taking part in the 60Sec Slime with Dr Weevil. Both available through the free Teacher App. They also showcase how much they enjoy their Maths and Literacy learning, finishing off with some personal feedback on what they love most about Skoolbo.

Digi-Eskwela Project helps raise achievement with Skoolbo!

Few would disagree that the advent of new technology has the potential to dramatically change educational outcomes for all children. However, children who reside in economically disadvantaged households can still lack access to these vital tools. This is where Skoolbo can help and we are delighted to report on our involvement with a very successful digital learning project in the Philippines called Digi-Eskwela.

We are very excited by the first set of results that have have come in from the project. The data shows excellent improvement across all areas.

This data also shows very clearly how increased usage leads to increased improvement. The students from Bitano Elementary School began playing Skoolbo first and have therefore answered more questions resulting in the greatest improvement of the two schools so far.

Tiwala Kids & Communities and The Patatas set up the project with the aim of  increasing access to learning technologies for some of the Philippines most disadvantaged children. It was hoped that this would lead to increased student engagement and academic success. The Patatas donated the hardware needed for the project and Tiwala took responsibility for the implementation of Skoolbo in the chosen schools. The project ran initially from October 2014 to October 2015 and we understand that there is strong desire from everyone involved to extend the project due to its phenomenal success.

Digi-Eskwela involved children from the following school- based urban settings;

  • Legazpi Port Elementary School
  • Bitano Elementary School

The schools recommended students most in need of assistance and Tiwala held tablet-based tutorials in the partner schools. Thirty students were accommodated in each class with three thirty-minute Skoolbo sessions per week per child.

Of course everyone is delighted with the improvement in essential literacy, numeracy and language skills but these fantastic testimonials from parents, students, and teachers tell us more about the wider benefits of Skoolbo. They reveal increased student engagement in the classrooms and higher motivation to learn at school and at home. The children are really enjoying using both tablets and the Skoolbo platform, which is wonderful!

The enthusiasm from the children is fantastic and they were not the only ones who loved being involved with the project. The parents expressed gratitude that their children were chosen to be part of the class and reported that their children enjoy attending Digi-Eskwela and playing Skoolbo.

“My child always looks forward to attending Digi-Eskwela because she likes playing with the tablet. I don’t have to remind her about it. She goes to school early in order to attend the class and play tablet games. “ Marilyn Sepato, mother of Mary Joy Sepato

“Lyka comes to school early in the morning even if her class is still in the afternoon because she enjoys playing with the tablet. I am happy that she has a chance to have fun while learning. “I am grateful that my child is enrolled in the class. We are poor so we cannot afford to buy a smartphone or tablet. But through this project, my daughter can play and use a tablet and learn.” Aileen Labanda, mother of Jobel Labanda

The classroom teachers attributed much of the increased classroom participation to being part of the project. The teachers believed that this is because children become increasingly confident as they answer more questions in the game.

They have shown improvement in their Mathematics and English subjects. “The pupils, especially the girls, have become more participative and excel more in written work activities. They are also active when asked to do board work exercises. The organisers hope to extend the project to involve more children by increasing the number of tablets available. We look forward to writing an update on how the project is progressing in the near future.

Withinfields Primary School Joins the One Million Club!

Today we take a look at a wonderful school from the Yorkshire and Humber region. Withinfields Primary School recently became a Skoolbo SuperSchool when they collectively answered over one million questions on the platform!

We knew there had to be some very special individual efforts that deserve recognition and so we were delighted to receive this lovely photograph of the marvellous Molly from Year 5.

Molly Broughton is a brilliant student! She has taken Skoolbo on board from the first day we’ve introduced it in school and she has been very enthusiastic in using it extensively to improve her Maths skills, Literacy – reading, spelling and comprehension.

Her parents are impressed with the way her skills have improved and are encouraging her to keep on using the platform.

She is our school champion at Skoolbo with an impressive amount of 27,000 answers.

You may recognise this young man as he recently helped his dad (Nick Negoita) deliver a wonderful presentation all about Skoolbo in front of a large audience. You can read all about this in our earlier blog post  Meet Mihai – Our Newest Skoolbo Presenter

Nick has now left the school to take up a new post. A little bird told us that he is busy introducing Skoolbo to his new students meanwhile Mihai remains at Withinfields to carry the Skoolbo flag!

Mihai Negoita, Year 3 has been conquered by Skoolbo even before the launch of Skoolbo UK and he has been very keen in reading all the stories on Zalairos adventures, as he found the game even more interesting after he lived so many adventures with the characters from Bo City and the surroundings. He also helped me present Skoolb platform in a CAS Meeting inn Kirklees back in  December 2015, being an amazing assistant.

He has managed to answer more than 13.000 questions on Skoolbo UK, and his reading skills have been immensely boosted by using the app.

He has also adventured in the Language Dragons section, learning most of the Spanish units…

I think this platform has been the best app/learning platform used in our school since I started working for Withinfields Primary School back in September 2015. It had a tremendous impact in our learning, children relations and behaviour.

It was specially useful in raising confidence levels in using computers and other devices for our EYFS and KS1 pupils.

Finally, I just want to add that we found Skoolbo extremely useful in working with small groups targeting the gaps in their achievement in Literacy and Maths.

Meadowbrook Primary School – World Cup Super Learners!

It has been a few weeks since the Skoolbo 2015 World Cup finished but we have not forgotten the tremendous performance of one Bristol school. Meadowbrook Primary School took our breath away with their sheer enthusiasm for learning!

Their energy and desire to win was contagious. These fabulous students logged on to Skoolbo at every available opportunity while their teachers and parents took to Twitter to rally support and keep everyone up to date with their progress. mb

 

Meadowbrook weren’t just competing with other countries and UK schools, they were also holding their own unofficial class-to-class challenge. When the challenge finished it was Voles class in first place with over 83,000 answers bringing their actual total to 237,861, so close to a quarter of a million answers! These are the World Cup scores for the top five Meadowbrook classes –

1st   Voles – 83,719

2nd   Otters – 62,472

3rd    Herons – 45,813

4th    Kingfishers – 34,889

5th    Fox – 19,166

We really thought that with dedicated schools like Meadowbrook on our team, the UK were going to claim the trophy. Sadly it was not to be…With only hours to go Team Australia swooped in, but the students of Meadowbrook had managed to finish top in the UK and 2nd in the World!

Meadowlands final

Skoolbo World Cup 2nd – 8th December 2015

With just two weeks to go until the launch of the 2015 Skoolbo World Cup it’s time for Team GB to get practising.

‘Team GB – who are they?’ we hear you ask…

You of course!

All children (and schools) in England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland are invited to join together in an effort to become Skoolbo World Champions. Together you make up Team GB and your task is to try to beat all the other Skoolbo teams from around the globe by answering the most literacy, numeracy and language questions over the 7 day challenge.

During the challenge students’ avatars will be dressed in an exclusive Team GB kit and every question answered correctly will take us one step closer to victory! Keep a look out for the dedicated Challenge Leaderboard which will show live results in real time!

Former Olympic Swimmer and Skoolbo Ambassador Adrian Turner knows all about preparing for a big event and has recorded this special message to get us all motivated and ready to win –

Denise Lewis Launches the NY vs London Challenge at The Shard!

What an exciting morning we have had! The Skoolbo NY vs London Challenge was officially launched  by Denise Lewis OBE at Western Europe’s tallest building, The Shard. The battle to find out who can answer the most literacy, numeracy and language questions over five days has begun!

The timing was perfect as today also saw the start of London Technology Week and we were delighted to have one of the top performing London Schools, Netley Primary School in Camden join us in a live Skype call. Netley teacher and Maths Subject Leader, Gareth Morris, was on hand to explain why he and his students choose Skoolbo to help boost maths and literacy skills in the classroom and at home.

Netley students are simply amazing and have answered over 1.2 million questions on the platform to date. This places them in an excellent position to give Team London a tremendous boost in the Challenge. They handled their Skype chat with Denise with extreme confidence and are wonderful ambassadors both for their school and for London schoolchildren in general. You can see them here calmly focused on their learning with Skoolbo just a few minutes before we spoke to them –

This dedication resulted in Netley students being among the first London schoolchildren to appear on the Challenge leaderboard early this morning although they’ll have to up their game if they’re to equal Sheringham Primary School. Sheringham students have had a stunning first day which has seen them shoot up into first place and open up a significant gap between first and second places –

As you can see New York Schools are beginning to claim their place on the leaderboard as they fight to reverse the brief advantage London Schools had as a result of the earlier sunrise this side of the Pond.

Pupils at Christ the King have their say!

Christ the King Roman Catholic Primary School have made frequent appearances on the leaderboards over the last few months including reaching the coveted number one spot on the world leaderboard –

This is a major achievement especially as they are a small one-form entry school competing against schools several times their size! We were intrigued to know the secrets of their success and how teachers integrate Skoolbo into their busy timetables. Mr Stell, Year 4 teacher explained –

Skoolbo has been a great addition to our school. It has been an exciting tool for the children to use to help re-enforce areas such as times tables and spellings. As they are able to access it home as well, the children are enjoying having this as part of their homework. Although, some parents have said that it has become more difficult to get their children to actually do their other homework, they are glad that the children are enthusiastic to learn and practice these key skills.

 In class, we aim to give each group some dedicated ‘Skoolbo’ time at least once a week  and they certainly never forget to mention if they have missed their turn. In the computer age that we are in, it is an up to date way of engaging the children in a fun way.

The added competition of point scoring between individuals, siblings, classes and counties adds to the enthusiasm of our children.  It is easy to manage from a schools perspective and hassle free.

The students also had wonderful things to say about learning with Skoolbo and about their interview with Olympic swimmer Adrian turner. We were overwhelmed when they decided to put their thoughts into these fabulous letters –
